MUSIC IS MY MUSE

“Where words fail, music speaks”

~ Hans Christian Andersen

I am unsure of whether it is more productive or if its a distraction (sometimes welcomed, sometimes not) but it seems like words flow much easier while listening to musicians such as Sarah Machlachlan or Blue Rodeo crooning quietly in the background of my mind. (Amazing Canadian artists)

It seems though, that as a writer, the artistry of someone else, playing alongside me, helps me create. Is this something that ALL writers do? Or do you find it better to be in a silent solace as you click away on your keyboard?

Sometimes writing secludes you from the outside world. At times it even becomes a road block in my relationship with my partner, because when I write, I lock myself in my home office and confine my thoughts, lest they leave before I have a chance to get them out. I feel like having soft lyrics echoing around me helps. It can be a lyrical thesaurus if I am stuck on a word, much like a a Crossword puzzle can help your vocabulary bloom.

Songs are inspiring. Often, while you are stuck at a space when thoughts and emotions won’t flow, you can change the track of your background music to change your mood and open your heart.

Music stems from the emotions of the musician. Isn’t that our mutual goal?
