How many writers on Medium use aliases or pseudonyms for their pieces?
I am having difficulty deciding when or where to use my actual name, and where to use my “Writing Name”. When I first signed up with Medium, I never thought to use my alter ego, as it just didn’t seem to make sense at the time, but it seems as though I may have backed myself into a corner. I may need some advice from all of the gifted writers who share this platform.
HERE’S THE SCENARIO:
I started writing a book a few years ago, that I do not want to attach my real name to. The book that I am writing for a client, will also not have my real name on the cover. My reasoning is A) my actual name is my married name from my ex husband- no I am NOT going back to my maiden name. I just don’t feel like using his name as my public one. B) the books I am writing are based on actual events in my life and in my client’s life, so I don’t want to be “findable” if shit hits the fan. And C) I actually love my pseudonym, as it has a lot of meaning behind it.
I have actually set up a Wordpress page called Marley’s Haus and although it is still a major work in progress, it makes me smile. My next step will be to get a business licence set up, under the same name, so that I can show my income from writing, as it progresses.
So, with all of this said, would I be smarter to change my pseudonym to everything, including Medium? Or does it make sense to use my alter ego/pseudonym for books and not other public writing? I was recently published in a provincial magazine under my real name, and once I signed the contract, I wondered if I would have been smarter to write it under Marley. I never dreamed that I would start being published so quickly after getting back into the writing field, and it seems to be moving so fast, that I cannot think straight.
My hope is that some of you have some advice for me, or that you can at least give me scenarios of how you would use a pseudo. It makes my head spin. My concern is that when my books are published, I will not be able to promote as well under my real name, unless I hire myself to promote Marley’s work…maybe that is the smart way to go?
The world of writing is such an amazing adventure. It is a dream come true to be able to bounce ideas off fellow writers and learn from so many diverse people. Being able to get your pieces out, and see that you can actually reach people, is like a high, and I am so glad I am back in the saddle. I just need to figure out, which of my “egos” is holding the reins.
